FDA Warning on drugs from the internet

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting consumers that certain drugs (Ambien, Xanax, Lexapro, and Ativan) ordered over the Internet may actually be haloperidol (Haldol), a powerful anti-psychotic that can cause serious symptoms such as difficulty breathing, muscle spasms and muscle stiffness. Haloperidol can also cause agitation or sedation.

The FDA was alerted when recipients complained to the US pharmaceutical manufacturer of one of the mislabeled products. Several consumers sought emergency medical treatment. The tablets that were determined to contain haloperidol came in packages postmarked in Greece.

Photographs of the packages and the tablets can be seen at www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/news/photos/haloperidol.html. Anyone who received tablets resembling those pictured, and did not order haloperidol, should notify the doctor who prescribed the original medication. Consumers can submit a report to the FDA at: www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/medwatch-online.htm.

Last year, the FDA investigated 53 cases of drug counterfeiting. In 2003, a case involved 18 million tablets of fake Lipitor. The counterfeiters embossed the bogus bottles with the Pfizer logo then sold them through a wholesaler in the Midwest where they were sold in legitimate pharmacies. Pfizer was alerted when customers complained about a bitter taste. The pharmaceutical company has now developed a team of 17 former law-enforcement agents to investigate counterfeit drugs.

While cases such as the haloperidol substitution do happen, the most common fraud is the packaging of useless filler in place of medicine. This filler is usually not toxic since that would call attention to the counterfeit. Expensive AIDS treatments are the most likely to be counterfeited. Erectile-dysfunction drugs are also a prime target since the consumer is often unlikely to report that the medicine failed to work.

Another unscrupulous and dangerous practice is "uplabeling" when the supplier boosts profits by, for example, selling a 10mg dose as 40mg. Expiration dates may also be altered.

Costumers who buy drugs over the Internet are particularly vulnerable. "Canadian" sites have been tracked to Belize, Russia and Vietnam. "Generic'" versions of drugs are being sold when there is no legitimate generic available. Though these practices are illegal there is not much regulation in effect. Consumers need to protect themselves. The FDA has a website with tips and information about buying medicine on-line. It can be found at www.fda.gov/buyonline.

In June, 2006, the FDA announced that it would fully implement regulations enacted in 1987. These regulations require pharmaceutical distributors to provide documentation of the "chain of custody" of their drugs throughout the distribution system which means that drugs would be tracked after they leave the factory. Products can now be tracked with a technology that works similarly to the E-ZPass. This is an expensive system, however, and is only used to track some drugs such as Oxycontin

Precautions you can take:

Be very cautious when buying on-line. Do not buy from sites that sell prescription medicine without a prescription. If the price is too good to be true, it probably isn't "true"Ð don't send money or a credit card number. Look for the following seals of approval on the sites:

State of Emergency

How is it that life can change so quickly? How is it in our country of millions and quality health care - so many have none?  How is it our middle class can't find benefits and help after spending years working hard, paying taxes and helping others?  what is wrong with our system?  I found out today that in our state if I can't return to work after my recovery but I can work at the computer, I will not be compensated by worker's comp for the differential between my salary and that of a much lower paying job. It's worker's comp's fault in slow, subpar medical care that I've lost my position and soon my ability to pay any bills.  the Hartford is a for profit money making organization that wants to get as much money as possible without paying for proper medical care. If they had done things as my physician had requested, i would have had surgery and been back to work by christmas.  Now my loss of a job affects not only my family but also those I have donated to for years, those who have relied on me for a job - lawn care, restaurants I frequented on a regular basis and kept sales going for, etc. It has a snowball effect and effects many economic situations.

You may or may not know but story but here it is and I am frustrated....

I’m a 40 year old female. Conservative.  Have my MBA, worked hard all my life.  I honestly don’t care about a lot of money.  Been through too many personal issues that have taught me the love of my friends and family is more important than what’s in my bank account.  But I am very protective of my family and what to do when one can not provide the basics like health insurance for them?  What happens then? How are the 84 million uninsured to survive? And these uninsured are hard working middle class people.  They are the people who pay high taxes, the ones who have given to our churches and charities, who have contributed and volunteered and cared about our fellow human beings until corporate America decided they could do what they wanted in a at will working state.  My story follows….how do I help my family and many others like us and how can this be changed?  Not legislation that will take years to pass or “good ideas” but something NOW!  This has been a problem for too long, unfortunately, when you aren’t living it, like anything else….you don’t worry about it : (I’m ashamed of myself and lack of awareness or concern to this point!):

We are a family IN CRISIS!! We are one of the millions of "middle class" families without insurance, we have no income.  We don't know how we will make it day to day.  My husband is disabled with Ulcerative Colitis and has tumors growing out of his fingers as a side effect to medication but right now I can’t afford to have them looked at, I can’t afford his daily medication. He is on 9 different medications and most do not have generics available.  One medication alone costs over $300 for one month of one medication.  Without them he will soon be hospitalized and I can’t afford that either.  I have paid thousands over the years in taxes and can’t get any benefits to help me. If I go into a hospital for him to receive care – I own property that I can lose.  I have given largely for years and am not eligible for any of the programs my taxes have supported because I’ve worked.  I have ZERO income, since November 2006.  I don’t know how I will pay for food for my children. I am a pharmaceutical representative who has worked 18 years - top sales with award trips 8 of those years. My doctors are all still good friends who support me.  In May of 2006, while working for Sepracor pharmaceuticals, I was in an automobile accident while on the job - 5pm doing "extra" after hours work for sales which were still top sales by the end of 2007.  I worked in pain, I was denied proper care by worker's compensation, I was harassed from the day of the accident by a manager who tried to fire me.  I still worked, I still brought in top numbers and money for the company. For 18 years, my husband was also a probation and parole officer working for the State of Missouri.  He suffers from Ulcerative Colitis and had a bad infection that spent his disease into a tail spin.  He left on FMLA with no pay because he couldn't spend enough time away from the bathroom to work, Leaving me to support our family.  With my knowledge, experience and relationships, I earned over 6 figures a year.  We did not live lavishly, we saved for college for our 2 children, we saved for retirement, we gave to others less fortunate in the area and volunteered at the children's hospital, epilepsy camp for kids, women's shelter for abused women.  Life was finally going good.  I am recovered from uterine cancer in 2005.  We have been together since our freshman year of college. Seen our ups and downs.  In January, Sepracor fired me because I took time off for surgery for my accident.  I am now recovering from a 3 discectomy which was done two weeks ago.  I have already had significant improvement.  If this had been done in Aug I would have been months without extreme pain and suffering. Today, I have no income, can not get insurance for my husband due to preexisting conditions. Can not afford the amount they want for COBRA payments.  Can not get medicaid because I own a house.  I probably won't be able to work in pharmaceuticals again because of the extensive driving and lifting. (I still have 3 discs in my lower back with issues).  I will end up in court for months looking for reimbursement for discrimination against a worker's comp claim. Most likely one that will be lost because the federal government supports employers and not employees even when documented clear discriminated. We work at will.  My two children are stressed and my youngest has started counseling to help him deal with the thoughts of not having money. His mom being sick and the thought that since his dad is so sick - he is concerned that he might die even though told other wise.  His dad will continue to get worse without proper medical care. We can't afford his over $1000 a month is medication and he is in need of more extensive treatment with a drug called Remicade which is a day in the hospital and IV and extremely expensive but the thing they think could really help him. He can not work outside of the home because he can’t get away from the bathroom for more than 30 to 45 minutes at a time.   We are selling off things in our house to survive. My husband doesn't have the energy to do much around our house, I can't lift, bend my neck for the next 6-8 weeks, I can't clean, my children help but our house is falling down around us. We had started a new company that provides personal safety training/ self defense for women in the area but it is just getting off the ground – he has been unable to get out of the house long enough to work and I am recovering from surgery and will be in rehabilitation / PT for a little while.  We thought this would allow him to work at his own pace around his sickness but it's just started in January with no sales yet and an SBA loan that needs to be paid back.  I have given my life to the health care industry and made millions of dollars for the pharmaceutical companies I have worked for and today can't even afford the medication I need. There are so many others out there like us - trying to work, trying to survive and give back but can't afford medical care or other bills at the moment. We have always paid what we owe and now we are looking at bankruptcy.  We need help and have no idea where to turn. We can’t pay bills, get medical care because of pre-existing conditions, pay for lunches at school for the kids.  Life has turned completely upside down in a matter of months with no help.   If this happened to you tomorrow, would you be prepared?  We made it 6 months but with COBRA payments of over $1500 we can’t make it any longer….WOULDN’T PREVENTATIVE SHORT TERM EMERGENCY PROGRAMS BE BETTER THAN TAKING ON FAMILIES FULL TIME THROUGH STATE AND GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE? We will make it to the streets soon and then instead of my $40,000 a year I pay in taxes, I’ll be consuming a lot more for my family of four….I thought the idea was to have productive members of society, not ones needing state funding that isn’t available…

How do we fix this system and make it better for ALL?! How can you help? What can I do and who can I speak to to get a better program in place? I will be a spokes person for this cause that I have become very passionate about – these are illiterate, hard working members of society and they need help! Not just financially but medically!!! Health officials urge FDA to release drug safety data

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital have urged the Food and Drug Administration to change its policy on the confidentiality of safety data from drug trials. The commentary, published this month in the journal Health Affairs (Vol. 26, No. 2), was prompted by recent cases of drugs found to have dangerous side effects after entering the market, such as the anti-inflammatory rofecoxib. Pharmaceutical companies in the past have sought to restrict public access to drug trials, claiming such information could expose trade secrets. By increasing access to data, researchers would be able to independently evaluate the risks of the drugs, leading to quicker risk detection, the authors argued.

Personally, I think this would be a great step forward but that’s because I come from a pharmaceutical background and know the way the companies work from the inside….Your thoughts on the issue?

Keeping An Eye On One Another

To start the week after a weekend of "togetherness", I'd like to talk about safety in a different sense of the word.  Not protecting yourself from violence outside your home but that within... Domestic Violence. As Mrs Missouri 2003, I learned two incredible things from the opportunity.  First, I will never be in a pageant again - more work for a televised program than full time job and home combined.  But the second and most important part of the pagaent that I joined for was to be a voice for physically and verbally abused women.  I had the chance that year to meet 50 of the most beautiful (inside and out) women in the US and another 50 or so from around the world - many of them participating because they had once been on the receiving hand of an abuser.  They lived secret terrifying lives and wanted others to know it was okay - you can get out, you can survive.  I'm not saying it's not scary being on your own and some of the women I met that year lecturing had to hide to escape their situation - to keep themselves and their children safe.  Others continued to suffer in silence. 

In saying that, here are a few tips for the week.  Weekends are fun, exhausting, relaxing and draining all at one time but can be worse for someone who is now full time with an abuser in the home.....

DO YOU LIVE WITH AN ABUSER?
It is confusing and painful when the person you care about is hurting you. And while every relationship has its ups and downs, it’s especially concerning when there’s a pattern of controlling behavior. Does the person you’re married to or dating:

• Embarrass you with put-downs?
• Look at you or act in ways that scare you?
• Control what you do, who you see, talk to, where you go, or what you wear?
• Stop you from seeing your friends or family members?
• Make all of the decisions?
• Prevent you from working?
• Act like the abuse is no big deal, it’s your fault, or even deny doing it?
• Force you to have sex?
• Intimidate you with guns, knives or other weapons?
• Shove you, slap you, choke you, or hit you?
• Threaten to kill you or harm themselves if you break up?
• Monitor your computer or phone use or text and IM you excessively?

WANT OUT?

If you are living with domestic violence, there IS help.
~Get practical and emotional advice from the National Domestic Violence Helpline  1-800-799-SAFE (7233). It's confidential, free and operates 24 hours. The helpline may also be able to help you find emergency accommodation.
~Talk to a trusted friend or family member. They may be able to offer you a safe place to stay if you need a break or if you decide to leave.
~Keep a list of essential phone numbers in a safe place. These should include the 24-Hour National Domestic Violence Helpline, your local police station and a solictor's number.
~Always keep your mobile fully charged or your card topped up.

Checklist for preparing to leave:

Keep a bag packed with the following important items:
Personal items:

A change of clothes and toiletries for you and your children
Some money
Duplicate car key
Medication for you and your children
A child's special toy
Jewelery
Mobile phone charger
Address book
Photographs

Key documents:

Passports
Benefit books
Driver's licencse
Any court orders/injunctions
Birth certificates for yourself and your children
Divorce papers/marriage license/custody papers
Bank details/account numbers
Credit cards/cheque books
Mortgage or housing details
National insurance number
Medical cards for you and your children

Pack these items over a period of time. Only you will know when this is safe to do so. Keep the bag in a safe and secret place, perhaps at the home of a relative and / or friend.

More Light, Less Safe

Daylight savings time is coming early this year, the ground hog says spring is coming early and the weather here in the midwest is finally bringing in sunshine....My favorite time of year - summer won't be far off.  Unlike my husband, I'm not a sweater person.  I love swimming, roller blading, walking the dog .....

In saying that I'd like to make a few safety points for outdoor activities:

* Avoid walking or jogging alone.  Never walk or jog after dark. 
* Tell someone where you are going and when you can be expected to return
*  Always walk or jog in a familiar area
*  Always choose a well-lit path, and avoid dark or vacant areas
* Carry a whistle to summon help or pepper spray on a key chain for deterrent
*  If you can afford one, carry a cellular phone with you and use it if you feel
    uncomfortable
*  Be alert of your surroundings.  If you suspect you are being followed, run in a
    different direction; go to the other side of the street, and yell or whistle for help;
     or head quickly to a lighted area, a group of people or an emergency
     telephone
*  If you exercise outdoors on a regular basis, vary your route and schedule
*  Try not to overload yourself with packages or other items.  Keep your hands
    as free as possible
*  Do not wear music headphones while walking or jogging
*  If you carry a purse, carry it close to your body, preferably in front. If it has
    a shoulder strap, be prepared to let it go if snatched.
*  If you are confronted by a thief, give them what they want. Don't pursue the
    thief Try to get a detailed description and call the police immediately.

This is indeed illuminating and useful. Take a moment to write in your satisfaction scores. For new intentions for creating the best life possible for yourself, consider the following: For each area, acknowledge what you do like or love. Celebrate some gratitude for each section, even if it's challenging to find something positive. Example: Friends – "I'm grateful that I enjoy the love and support from a multitude of friends – personally at home, and online". Then articulate what you would love to create moving forward. Example: "For Friends, I would love to have more time to meet my friends consistently for lunch or happy hour because they leave me feeling energized." Don't be overly critical. Don't dig too hard for issues or problems to fix. If there's no desired shift, great! Let it be and celebrate that. Your specific goals for self improvement and celebration can flow from this process….. make your dreams a reality….

Life can be a challenge, a roller coaster ride, tough.  I am currently battling sickness and recovering from surgery, unemployed through corporate negligence, fighting to pay next months bills to support my family but then I go to the local homeless shelter to volunteer and I wouldn't want to change places with any of them.  We all have our "crosses" to bear but if we stick together, support rather than fight each other, we can all prosper! We can unite to win our independent battles.

 

Take today to celebrate all that women have achieved and accomplished to date. "Where you have that gut instinct telling you that there's something wrong. So if your'e walking down the street and something doesn't feel right, then that's a self defense moment, " instructor Paul Schmitz says.

Schmitztells his students they have choices if confronted with an attacker.

Everyone should know at least a couple moves to defend themselves from an attack. "A lot of self defense is in practicing and making certain behaviors habitual. So body posture, breathing, eye contact and voice is something we stress." instructor Larry Elliottsays.

Experts say being aware of your surroundings, especially at night, is most important. Nearly 2/3 of sexual assaults occur at night, according to the US Department of Justice. But attacks happen during the day too. More than half of violent crime incidents in the country last year occurred between 6am and 6pm.
